Ash Wednesday follows Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras is a day of self-indulgence celebrated before the start of Lent and its 40 days of abstinence and fasting. The self-indulgence is supposed to be reasonable.
Lent is a 40-day season of the liturgical year when Catholics practice abstinence, prayer and fasting to drawn themselves close to Christ.
